Appalachian Trail

For hiking enthusiasts, access to the famous Appalachian Trail is only an eight-mile trek from Santeetlah Lakeside. Once there, you can continue hiking a small section featuring steep climbs and varying uphill grades.

Tail of the Dragon

Those with a need for speed can journey to the Tail of the Dragon for a joy ride. Located on Route 129 and featuring 319 curves across only 11 miles, this serpentine highway is a hot spot for motorcyclists, sports cars, and thrill-seekers.

Joyce Kilmer Forest

Adjoining Lake Santeetlah, this memorial to poet-soldier Joyce Kilmer was set aside in 1936 and is currently one of America’s only remaining old-growth forests on the East Coast. Many trees are estimated to be over 400 years old, some more than 20 feet in circumference and over 100 feet tall.

Nantahala National Forest

The forest surrounding Lake Santeetlah is owned and protected by the Federal Government, which shields the area from future development and helps conserve the tranquility of the lake for decades to come.

Cheoah River

Whether you're looking for tranquil waters for fishing and swimming or challenging rapids for white water rafting, Cheoah River has it all. Nearly 20 miles long, this river flows from Santeetlah Dam to the Calderwood Boat Launch and features Level IV and V rapids for experienced paddlers.
